White Cane Day - October 15, 2025

WHITE CANE AWARENESS DAY OCTOBER 15th

Rhode Island Services for the Blind and ORS invite you to

Celebrate independence and awareness this October 15th

Join us in celebrating White Cane Awareness Day on October 15th!

A day that is dedicated to recognizing the white cane as a tool of independence for people who are blind or have low vision.

More than a simple mobility device, the white cane is a symbol of skill and freedom. It allows users to travel safely and independently, detecting obstacles and navigating their communities with confidence. It also alerts drivers and pedestrians to exercise caution and give the right-of-way, as protected by law in all 50 states.

This year let's commit to learning more about the significance of the white cane and celebrate the achievements of people who are blind and visually impaired and continue to build a more inclusive workplace and community.

How you can support White Cane Awareness Day:

• Give space: When you see someone with a white cane, provide them with adequate space on sidewalks and in public areas.

• Yield to the cane: As a driver, be aware of the law requiring you to stop for pedestrians using a white cane or a guide dog.

• Ask before you act: If you feel the need to offer help, ask first and respect their independence. Never grab their cane or touch the person without permission.
